The 47-Hour Tax

Your team loses more than a full work-week every month to context-switching, status updates, and information hunts. Here is where it actually goes.

The Shape of a Wasted Day

Your team does not lose a full work-week to one big thing. They lose it to 400 small things: a Slack thread that requires scrolling, a dashboard that requires three filters, a CSV that lives on someone's desktop, a meeting that could have been a paragraph, a status update nobody reads.

We measured this at nine companies across sales, ops, and finance teams. The number held steady: roughly 47 hours per knowledge worker per month disappear into friction that produces no output.

[Before a system: six context breaks before noon. After: one protected focus block.]

The Four Categories

When we trace where those hours go, they fall into four buckets every time. Information retrieval, hunting for the right file, the right dashboard, the right Slack thread. Status reporting, assembling updates for people who could self-serve. Coordination overhead, meetings about meetings, calendar tetris, re-explaining context. Reformatting, turning data in one shape into data in another shape so a human can read it.

None of these produce customer value. All of them are table stakes to operate a modern business. They are pure overhead, and every one of them is mechanizable.

[A 16-person team reclaims ~752 hours monthly. At blended $50/hr loaded, that is $450K of payroll annually.]

You are not paying salaries to watch loading spinners. Stop treating the tax as the cost of doing business.

The Only Question That Matters

You will never eliminate this tax to zero. You can absolutely drop it by 70%. The question is not whether it's possible, it is. The question is whether you know, to the hour, where your team's time is going today.

If you don't know, you're not running a business. You're running a hope. The Forge's first move with any client is instrumenting the tax, because what you cannot see, you cannot forge.

Next step

From reading to installing.

Field Notes diagnose the friction. The Sprint and the Install eliminate it.
